Frequently Asked Questions

There are some questions that I get asked pretty often and thought it would be more convenient to have them all in one place. If you have a question that isn’t on the list, please go over to the contact page and feel free to ask! I am happy to answer any questions you may have. I have written full posts about some of these questions and will leave direct links as well if you want a more detailed answer.

1. When did you move into your van?

We moved into the van full- time at the very beginning of October 2017. The build out started in May 2017.

2. How much did it cost for the whole sha- bang?

The van is a 2011 Mercedes Sprinter 144″ WB and cost $18,000. The materials for the build cost a little over $6,000. We did have help with the build but their labor prices are required to be private. If you want any contact info for them, please just let me know. They ARE looking to do more and are located in Indianapolis.

3. How do you afford living on the road?

We saved as much money as possible before leaving to carry us through about 8 months on the road. However, we are doing odd jobs and using different apps to earn money throughout our adventure so that we can stay on the road for a year. We also just started an Airbnb Experience and are working to monetize this site soon.

4. Where do you park overnight?

When we are just passing through a city or haven’t been to a city for awhile, we typically look for a Walmart or Cracker Barrel. If we are traveling through different parks or near any cool wildlife areas, we try to find free campsites in dispersed camping areas. You can also see a map with full lists here.

5. What your plans after van life?

We don’t have any concrete plans right now for what happens next. We just knew we weren’t happy with how we were living before the van and are much happier these days. We hope something will start to bubble up from the van life thing, and we will find our way again. But for now, exploring and being lost is kind of the plan.

Like I said, please let me know if you have any questions that I have missed. Most of these are geared towards the van because that just happens to be what I get asked about the most. I hope this helps!

Thank you,

Sydney
