The most important part of my routine on the road is in the morning when I’m setting the mood for the rest of the day. Coffee is essential for me to start the day on the right note (in addition to making my bed & kissing my dogs). No matter where I am in the world, parking lot, or mountains, the first few minutes of my day is always the same. I’ve become so passionate about having good coffee on the road that I even created my own! Below is an outline of my coffee-making routine to get the best cup every time +all the essentials that I recommend (at home or traveling).

THE ROUTINE

Step 1: Choose Your Method

Since moving into the van, I have become a huge fan of the pour over method. My favorite one is the Stanley Classic Set. It’s super portable & way more durable than other options (such as glass). You don’t need a paper filter which is also a huge bonus because it creates less waste + you don’t risk needing a filter and having to use a sock (I have actually done this)! On long driving days or really busy weeks, I opt for the French Press because I can make multiple cups at a time.

Step 2: Grind Your Beans & Heat Water

Once I choose my method, I grab my grinder and start hand grinding the beans. You can always use an electric grinder or just purchase ground coffee, but I love the quality of the beans after manual grinding! While I do this, I put my water on the stove so that everything is ready about the same time. I have a “gooseneck” kettle which I love because it makes it super easy to pour!

Step 3: Set Up Your Pour Over & Get to Roastin'

This is the best part! Give me all the smells. You may have to play around a few times to get the right coffee: water ratio for your preference. But place the beans into the pour over & start pouring the hot water all on them beans. I try to go fairly slow because that’s what the experts say to do.. not sure if it makes a difference but hey, a girl can try. Leave a lil room for the next step which is definitely the most important!

Step 4: Heat Up Oat Milk & Froth

Oat milk forever changed my coffee GAME. Has to be oat milk (don’t you dare try to compare almond milk). Now that my kettle is empty, I heat up my milk. Whip out the frother which is *essential* if I do say so myself. Froth the oat milk and pour it to the tippy top. You will regret nothing.

Step 5: Admire & Enjoy!

Maybe don’t spill it everywhere like these photos suggest but please do enjoy it! Coffee is the best time of the morning. Not only because it’s delicious but it can dictate the rest of your day. Take in the early morning silence, breathe in a little fresh air and make the perfect cup every time.
